As we settle into another school year, October is the perfect time to practice reading with our therapy dogs. Meet Clover, Rusty, Zoe, and Turner (Janie is on vacation this month!) at Read to a Dog on Saturday, October 4th from 11:00 am to Noon. This program is open to all ages and abilities, both readers and pre-readers.

Reading aloud to non-judgmental listeners (like dogs!) boosts confidence and improves reading and recitation skills. Moreover, reading together helps to reinforce letter recognition and vocabulary, and it creates a stronger bond with books. It's also a lot of fun! Don't believe us? Check out these great photos from our September session.

Ready to sign up? Cool! Please register below. Woof!

October... when the mind turns to pumpkins, candy, and, of course, witches!

Sheila Brodhead, Psy.D., author of the middle-grade novels My Weird Neighbor and Weird Trip Back to Salem, presents this interesting program about the witch hysteria that struck Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 and led to the Salem Witch Trials. She will discuss commonly accepted explanations for the contagion of hysteria, and will also dispel some of the myths surrounding this tragic year in America's history.

This program is suitable for ages 10 and up.

Looking for ways to spruce up your holidays with interesting decorating ideas or tasty new recipes? Do you want to create easy homemade holiday gifts with your family this year? Looking for ideas for that "perfect gift?"

Join librarian Ilene Lefkowitz for an entertaining introduction to Pinterest. What is Pinterest, you ask? Well, remember how you put photos and posters up all over the walls of your bedroom when you were a teen? This is a similar idea. You create topic or idea boards, then "pin" related images, videos and links to that board. This way, you can easily share them and refer back to them again. You can also browse the idea boards that other Pinterest users have created, and re-pin interesting things you find.

We all know how ghosts are portrayed in gothic novels or Hollywood, but what's the real scoop on ghosts? The word "ghost" is actually an umbrella term that defines many types of paranormal phenomena. Survival of the human personality after death has become a popular topic, and there is mounting evidence to support this claim.

Combining his years of involvement in the investigation of haunted locations with his unique spiritual perspective, Gordon Thomas Ward will explain his own views on ghosts, and share his experiences, audio clips, and photographs of ghostly meetings. He will also teach attendees how to conduct their own investigations of ghostly phenomena, with no need for costly equipment.

A previous attendee of this workshop exclaimed, "I can't do Gordon Ward's presentation the justice it deserves. He isn't a ghost chaser looking to sensationalize every spooky legend out there, and he's not in denial that there are things that happen that we are just beginning to understand. Instead he presents a very level-headed and logical approach to proving that we are not alone."
